Overview

  • This unit’s mindfulness moment uses guided visualization as a tool to regulate your emotions. It incorporates different kinds of weather a captain at sea may encounter, similar to the different emotions you may encounter throughout a day.
  • This unit also includes activities designed to help you describe feelings and recognize emotions.

Unit 5 focuses on understanding and identifying emotions, especially during stressful times.

    Bridge Exercises

Why This Matters: Colors are deeply tied to emotions through cultural, psychological, and even biological factors. Different colors can evoke specific feelings or reactions, which is why they’re commonly used in art, design, marketing, and therapy to influence mood and behavior. The emotional effect of colors can vary widely based on personal experiences or cultural associations.

    Mandala

A mandala is a geometric, often circular design that represents the universe and unity in many cultures. The word “mandala” comes from the ancient Sanskrit language and means “circle” or “center.” Mandalas are used in various art forms and meditation for different purposes, including healing, self-expression, and focusing attention.

Read the following instructions for this exercise. Then print the mandala on the slide or another mandala to color.

Recall a recent emotional experience. Color a mandala using colors that represent the emotions tied to that experience.

Why This Matters: A feelings wheel is a visual tool designed to help you identify, understand, and communicate your emotions more effectively. It organizes a wide range of emotions into categories and subcategories, allowing you to pinpoint specific feelings beyond broad terms like “happy” or “sad.” It’s often used in psychology, counseling, and emotional intelligence training to enhance self-awareness and emotional articulation. It can help you move beyond surface-level emotional descriptions, diving into the complexity of inner experiences.

Share the feelings wheel with a family member or peer. Explain what it is and how it’s used.

Practice using the feelings wheel to identify emotions in the moment and others you recently experienced.

Ask your family member or peer to use the feelings wheel to share feelings they experienced the previous week and during a transition time in their life.  With permission from your family member or peer, post your reactions to this discussion. You do not need to identify the person you talked with in your post.

A happy Asian gay man is listening to music and using his tablet while standing in his roomWhy This Matters: Music expresses emotions in a unique way by engaging both cognitive and emotional systems. It communicates feelings through a combination of melody, harmony, rhythm, tempo, and lyrics. The interplay of these musical elements evokes a range of emotional responses, from joy to sadness and everything in between.

Even without words, music can express emotions that transcend language. Its ability to express and evoke emotions is so great because it engages our intellect and our emotions, often communicating feelings more directly and powerfully than words alone.

    • Practice identifying your emotions during the week. On your discussion baord, post the titles of three songs that reflect the emotions you felt.

Why This Matters: Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, understand, manage, and effectively use emotions in yourself and others. It plays a key role in how you interact with people, make decisions, handle stress, and build relationships. Developing emotional intelligence can help you navigate challenges like school pressure, friendships, family dynamics, and the transition out of high school.

Watch a video about what emotional intelligence is and how you can develop greater self-awareness.

Answer the reflection questions and then post in the discussion board.

    • What emotions do you find the hardest to manage, and why?
    • What strategies do you use to calm down when you’re feeling overwhelmed?
    • How do you express your emotions at school?
    • How do you navigate situations where people experience different emotions from you?
